Depression In Children Needs To Be Taken Seriously

Since self-isolation activities have been put in place by many countries in the world to break the chain of transmission of COVID-19, the community is no longer able to carry out activities as freely as before, including students. Students who are still studying must be forced to attend classes online. But it can be difficult for some people, especially those who are less able.

As quoted by Al-Jazeera, a student from Kerala, India, decided to take a controversial action to end her life after she felt depressed because she was afraid of not being able to take online classes. The 14-year-old girl doesn’t have a TV or cellphone that she can use to attend her online classes.

The unnamed student reportedly disappeared from her home on June 1, then at around 3:30 p.m. she was found dead in a quiet place near her home. When found, his body was burned to the ground. The police also found an empty bottle of kerosene that the poor student allegedly used to burn herself.

The student’s father said that they did have a TV in the house that didn’t work. Since Corona’s pandemic isolation, the father had almost no income so he could not buy his son a new cellphone or TV to attend his online classes.

“He told me that it needed to be fixed but I couldn’t finish it. I also couldn’t afford a cellphone. I don’t know why he did this. I said we could see other options, like going to a friend’s house,” said the student’s father. as quoted by NDTV.

Reportedly the mother of the poor child had just given birth a few weeks earlier, so that the financial burden of this family was increasing.

Stress and depression experienced by students in India can indeed cause anxiety and the mind becomes uneasy. Of course it is very impacting on health. There are several things that can be done to relieve stress experienced, such as by avoiding things that invite panic, consulting with people you trust, spending time with positive things, or writing a journal before going to sleep.

According to Michael J. Breus, Ph.D., a psychologist, the ritual of writing a journal can be done before bedtime or when the mind feels bored. When venting out all the anxiety that is felt, make sure to also write suggestions or solutions to the problem being faced.

Alex Lickerman, M.D. also recommend that someone who feels depressed let alone have feelings of suicide should not bury their own feelings. According to him, depression can be cured by the attention of family and closest friends. So when there is someone who looks depressed, don’t ignore it. Try to talk to him or vent, because actually people who are depressed need someone to talk to heart to heart.

So be concern to your kids especially if you both as parent could not effort something they need. Talk to them. B wise.
