Is College Really Worth It?

The question of whether college is worth it is a fairly new one in the scheme of things. When you’re looking at payment options so you can afford college, you have to deal with the fact that tuition has gone up by 296 percent since 1995. A price increase of this magnitude is hard to deal with when post-collegiate employment options don’t look promising. It’s not that there aren’t any jobs available. It’s that wages are low and the cost of living is high, making it hard to pay off student loans.

A recent poll found 47 percent don’t think college is worth the cost, while 49 percent do. Young people between 18 and 34 were especially negative, with 57 percent giving college a thumbs down, while 39 insisted college is worth it. These numbers have changed drastically over the course of four years. In 2013, 56 percent of young people were optimistic and 38 percent weren’t.

Where do you stand on the efficacy of college? There are, of course, studies that show college graduates earn a lot more. But it’s not my intent to trot these studies out for you. Instead, I’m going to focus on the current state of the US economy, and show why it indicates college is indeed worth the cost.

Jobs Numbers and Wages

Wages have stagnated for the bottom 20 percent of workers since the 1970s. By and large, the bottom 20 percent of earners are those who only have a high school diploma, or less. A college degree prepares you for a job in the upper 80 percent. And there may be good news on the horizon for wage growth.

The unemployment rate is currently 4.4 percent, the lowest it’s been since before the Great Recession, and maintaining full employment is the key to raising wages. As the economic argument goes, the more people are employed, the more demand there is for workers. Greater demand for workers translates into higher wages as employers have to do more to attract qualified employees.

At the current rate, barring unforeseen catastrophe, there’s no reason the unemployment rate won’t continue to fall.

A lower unemployment rate also means more job openings. The more people are employed, the more productivity and growth for businesses, which means employers need to increase the number of positions as they grow. Again, businesses want to attract qualified employees, and they view those with a college degree as being more qualified.

The current economic picture points toward more job opportunities and higher wages. This means people with college degrees will not only be able to find a job, they’ll also be able to pay off student loan debt faster than they can now.

And when it comes to finding a job, nothing beats personal connections. College gives you the chance to make plenty of personal connections that could last for the rest of your life.

A Matter of Degrees

There are other added bonuses. Some degrees prepare you to help people in ways you never could without the degree. A master’s in social work allows you to provide therapy to clients who sorely need it, and the US Bureau of Labor expects social work careers to grow 19 percent by 2024. That’s a low estimate. The median salary for social workers is $46,890, but you can expect that number to rise too. Careers that require empathy, such as social work, are among the low risk jobs when it comes to automation. You won’t find a robot giving anyone therapy anytime soon.

The same applies to nursing jobs. Nurses need empathy, something artificial intelligence will never have. There are nursing school scholarships available to help ease the cost of tuition. You’ll earn a Bachelor of Science in anything from Therapeutics to Microbiology to Pathophysiologic Foundations. Aging baby boomers are going to need great care from qualified nurses. You’ll be well-equipped to help, and there will be no shortage of jobs available.

Once robots take over, it will be an incredibly competitive market when it comes to scoring social work jobs and nursing jobs. But if you get in on these fields now, you’ll be ahead of the pack.

Furthermore, degrees in high paying fields today are becoming easier to get. Health administrators earn an average of $63,414 a year. To get a master’s degree in health administration, you don’t need to take the GRE, you can do it online, and it only takes two years.

College Is Worth It

Given the fact that low-paying jobs such as cashier, toll booth worker, and fast food worker will be automated in the coming years, from the job availability and money perspective, it’s definitely worth it to go to college. And college is an eye-opening experience. If you have to take out loans, just prepare yourself by studying as hard as you can. Meet as many people as you can and look into good jobs before you graduate.

Envelope Stuffing: Legit Work At Home Business or Scam?

If you have ever looked for a home business, or even just opened up your city’s free weekly paper, you’ve probably seen an ad claiming you can make thousands of dollar stuffing envelopes.

All you have to do is pay a small fee and you will get paid for each envelope stuffed—you’ll be able to make tons of money, all from the comfort of your own home.

Are you picturing yourself going through piles of envelopes will watching Buffy reruns and eating potato chips? Your only concern is how to avoid paper cuts?

While that would be great real life is quite different. In reality, most envelope stuffing work from home jobs don’t involve either envelopes or stuffing. According to the FTC, most of these ads aren’t offering you a job at all. You send them money and they send you a letter telling you to place the same envelope-stuffing ad in newspapers or magazines, or to send the ad to friends and relatives. You get paid when they send you money looking for information about envelope-stuffing jobs. So the only stuffing that is happening is when you sucker someone else into stuffing $10 into an envelope and sending it to you. And the only thing being stuffed is a copy of the same letter they sent you.

Are there legitimate work from home envelope stuffing jobs?

Let’s look at a few facts.

Why would anyone in his or her right mind pay you loads of money to stuff an envelope?
That’s right, they wouldn’t. No sane person would pay you $10 to stuff an envelope. I called my neighborhood Kinko’s who quoted me a price of $260 to stuff 1000 envelopes. That’s no where near $10 an envelope.

Beware the “starter kit” scam
Um, do you really need a kit telling you how to stuff an envelope?

Free envelopes and stamps
Envelopes and stamps are expensive. The only way you’re going to get them for free is by people sending you self-addressed stamped envelopes—which seems so ancient and outdated now. Don’t these people know that you can reach way more people online?

Extra fees
So-called work from home business opportunities like these love to attach fees whenever and however they can: processing fees, disclosure fees, starter kit fees. You get the picture. Whenever someone asks you to pay a fee like one of these ask yourself what they need the money for. What, exactly, are they processing? A disclosure fee is the most ridiculous. They are asking you to pay them before they tell you anything, like stuffing envelopes is some highly classified secret that must be guarded with one’s life, until of course someone else shoves $20 in their face…

Work From Home Testimonials & Super Special Reports
These come in the form of special reports that tell you all about legitimate home businesses that are really, really real. These exist only to sell you the original product. The whole purpose of these “special reports” is to convince you to send more of your hard-earned money to these shysters. Testimonials mean nothing. You’ve all seen the quotes, “I’ve made thousands stuffing envelopes from the comfort of my own home!” –Susie Homemaker. Well, Susie Homemaker probably doesn’t exist. And if she does she’s probably the original scammer’s mother or girlfriend. Just because something is in writing doesn’t make it real.

Ok, so you still think there might be legitimate opportunities for you to stuff envelopes and make easy money working from home?

Here are a few warning signs you should be aware of:

  • No contact info. No email. No phone. No address.
  • If they do have a phone number no one ever answers it.
  • If they have an address it’s a P.O. Box.
  • They ask for money before they’ll tell you anything.
  • They promise you the world, or at least tons of cash.

How to Start Your Own Music Recording Studio

Do you have goals that you want to pursue in life but don’t know how to get started? It’s easy to dream about ideal careers, but sometimes it may be even easier to let them stay that way—just dreams. So what does it take to get a business off the ground?  I interviewed David Bennsky Jr., the owner of Da Business Productions , to get an idea of what it takes to turn dreams into reality, and even better—into paper. I’m talking about money making strategies that you can use every day. In just over a decade, he has managed to turn a passion for music into a well renounced studio full of talented artists.

YOUNG MONEY: Have you always loved music?
DAVID BENNSKY, JR.:
I’ve loved music since I was born and as I get older music speaks to me. It calls to me every day. It just talks to me and tells me what to do on a track, whether it is my own musical interpretation or an artist’s. Music has molded me into what I am today.

YM: What goes in to starting a studio?
DB:
I would say a lot of thought and preparation. You have to be willing to take business risks and build your clientele up because you will not be able to make money right away.  You should be ready for that. You have to have the studio equipment and be able to fully use it to your best ability. If you have someone helping you record in the studio who is not familiar with the equipment, you have to be able to teach and train them. You have to have a lot of self-confidence because there are a lot of people out there that have smaller studio set ups and are doing it themselves. You have to be fully qualified to start your own studio and know that you are superior to others in your field.

YM: How do you think starting a studio today differs from starting a studio twenty years ago?
DB:
Twenty years ago you would be recording on tape reels. Now, you can pay around two hundred dollars for a set up and charge someone an hourly rate. You don’t need a $200k board. You can have a $1k dollar board and make $250k music. The work flow has changed as well. People are more demanding for a hit record than they have ever been because music has changed so much. There aren’t any Michael Jacksons or Elvis Presley’s—people that dominated their genres. So many people are trying to have a hit record that they don’t focus on their experiences, stories, or creativity. They are missing out on their own emotional effects that lead to successful music.

YM: What’s your background in music?
DB:
When I first started I was 12-years-old, just using a two-track recorder. I just recorded funny stuff between me and my friends or I would sing over known songs.  Gradually, from that point on, I purchased better music programs and better equipment and learned the fundamentals of recording. I learned over time that a studio engineer is not just someone who records a song and makes sure the artist on the track sounds good, but is also someone who critiques the artist who is being recorded to make sure that they sound the best they possibly can.  It is about being honest to them about how they sound so that they can feel comfortable with you and most of all, comfortable with themselves while recording. By the time I was sixteen I had a one thousand dollar setup that I did not know how to use to its full potential. I just worked and earned the money to buy it. I knew soon after that I didn’t know how to use the set up. I knew I wanted to either get educated on how to use it or do the hit or miss thing until I figured it out.

For the next four years, I used the set up on and off. Nothing serious, just wanted to record people and get some hours in. Then, after graduating high school, I went to the ITT Technical Institute for computer networking. I did it for about a year until I met someone there who had the same passion for music and recording as I did. That person made me realize that my goal was music instead of computer networking. I dropped out of ITT Tech and I went to Sheffield Institute of Recording Arts in Phoenix, Maryland. I took a 292 hour course, certifying me as an audio engineer for live sound, studio acoustics, audio engineering and producing. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I took classes four days a week for eight hours a day. I got hands on experience with industry professionals who worked with big name artists or started their own businesses. I’ve had 12 years experience working with artists in the D.C. metropolitan area with live sound, studio work, artist management and promotion. I’ve spent over ten thousand hours in the studio.

YM: What are all of the different things you can do?
DB:
I can take artists to the Sheffield Institute because I have an agreement with them where I can use their studios in exchange for my services.  I can record anything from one microphone vocal setups  to 64- piece orchestras with one hundred microphones setups.  The tools and the setups available to me give me the capability to record and mix any genre. I also record at a home studio for a more personal experience. This studio is mostly built for hip-hop and pop sessions.

YM: What do you typically charge your customers?
DB:
Well I can either offer them packages if they want to record, mix, master and duplicate their projects. These package deals can include CD design.

Home studio: $40 an hour

YM: Any recommendations for someone starting their own music business?
DB:
I would recommend that a person go to a tech school for recording, but also go to a college and take business classes and courses so that they know how to promote their own business and understand marketing . Most importantly, they should learn to treat people well. It is more about contacts than about the services you provide.

Snapping a picture can be easy. Selling that picture can be less so. As a photographer, breaking into the field takes a mixture of talent, connections, and luck.

With any profession in the arts, it takes an incredible amount of work to be successful, let alone make money. However, if you know the right steps to take, it can be as easy as saying, “Cheese!”

Find Your Niche

Sometimes it’s smiled upon to be good at everything. This is not the case, though, when it comes to making money in photography. If you’re aiming for success in your career as a photographer, pick one thing that you love to take photos of and become really good at that.

So, if portraiture is your thing, then take portraits. If fashion is your calling, then take fashion photos. You can even be successful with photobooths if that is the route you want to take.

Potential clients will not be thrilled to look at a portfolio that is all over the place genre-wise when they are specifically looking for a wedding photographer. The key is to tailor your collection of work around a specific client, so that when they see your photographs, they know exactly what they’re getting into.

Get the Right Equipment

Once you figure out what genre to focus on, it’s time to acquire the camera — but not just any camera. Acquiring the right camera gear is essential to a successful photography business. The type of equipment you will need will be different depending on what kind of photography you are practicing.

You would not need the same equipment for landscape photography as you would for war photography. Make sure to take the time to research what specific needs the genre of photography you have chosen will have and what equipment will fill those needs. Another option to consider is renting the gear you need if purchasing it yourself is not feasible at the time.

Make an Eye-Catching Portfolio

So you have the equipment and you know what pictures to take. Now comes the fun part: putting together your portfolio. There are many tips on how to build a better portfolio, but here are a few to get you started.

First of all, make sure to show variety. Not in genre, but in lighting, camera angles, and subjects within your chosen niche. The number one thing you do not want your client to be is bored when flipping through your photos.

However, keep the size and orientation of the photographs the same. You will also want your portfolio to start strong and end strong. Do not include pictures you are less than happy with. Chances are potential clients will be less than happy as well.

Lastly, make sure you print your photo book. Clients are looking to buy physical prints from you, so it only makes sense to show them something they can physically touch and see. This will also give them a better idea of what the finished product will look like.

Be Social on Social Media

Social media is one of the most important things you can get involved in as a photographer. You need an online presence that people can find so that your photos and services can be found as well. You also need an overarching website that connects with all the social media platforms you’re active on.

In this digital age, it’s essential to be online where your clients will be. Social media is also a great way to network with other professionals and potential clients, as freelance photographer Ashley Grant would tell you. Forming these connections is crucial to your ultimate success as a photographer.

Consider investing some time in starting a blog as well. When you make content that is useful and relevant to your clients, they will most likely follow you and use you for current or future projects.

Now, what you’ve all been waiting for: it’s time to make some money! There are many different avenues you can take when it comes to selling your photographs and services. Some ways to earn money as a photographer include:

  • Selling prints at art fairs, local businesses, galleries or on online stores.
  • Entering contests to not only receive validation and potentially informative critiques, but also a nice sum of money if you win.
  • Becoming an assistant for an already established photographer. More often than not, they can use the extra help with coverage over large events such as weddings. In exchange, you get much needed experience and a paycheck too.

The Pros, Cons, and In-betweens of Starting Your Own Business

A black and white world doesn’t exist. If I were to tell you, “There’s absolutely no downside to starting your own business”, I would be be wrong. Rather, starting your own enterprise involves entering a world of complexity you’ve only glimpsed from the outskirts.

The good news: about one-third of new businesses survive 10 years or longer, while about half survive five years or longer. If you’re really in this for the long-term and are ready to go all out, you stand a good chance of sticking around. If you’re not, you stand a good chance of being among the two-thirds who fail.

Pros

  • There’s a lot of assistance available: Simply Google “How to start a business” and there’s a wealth of information. The Small Business Association offers a ton of resources, and you can attend conferences, or other meetups; for an example of the type of info available, check out my article about saving money on internet marketing.
  • There are a ton of options: For one, the possibility of e-commerce opens up a world in which all you need is a product and a website. If you don’t have your own product, there are organizations like Amway that supply products for you to sell. The Amway model is called “Direct Selling”, it typically provides a supplemental option for aspiring entrepreneurs. Three million people worldwide are Amway “Independent Business Owners”, and the direct selling model—in general, not just Amway’s—brought in $36.12 billion in 2015.
  • You can do what you want: What you do with your business is only limited by your own ambition. If you want to keep it small, keep it small. If you want to go big, do your best to appeal to a wider and wider audience.
  • You can offer true personalization: You are the shop-next-door, the equivalent of today’s mom-and-pop operation, the underdog, the face of what has made America great from the get-go. You can get to know your customers face-to-face, learn their names, what they like, what their friends like, and, ultimately, what your target audience wants and needs.
  • You can end your job search: Young adults ages 20-28 change careers an average of seven times before arriving where they want to be; start a business doing something you really want to do, and stop the vicious cycle of looking for a new job and being dissatisfied with what you find.

  • There’s a lot of responsibility: Some people thrive on responsibility and love it, while for others the level of responsibility involved in starting a business is just too much. Before starting a business, evaluate what type of person you are and ask yourself if you’re willing to invest your entire life in it.
  • There’s a ton of competition: On one hand, the many advanced, ravenous competitors make it tough to gain an advantage; on the other, competition is good for business because your competitors will push you to be better.
  • You can’t just sit there and focus on product: If your offering is all you’re passionate about, this can be a difficult truth to recognize: a great deal of your success will depend on marketing and branding, networking with other business owners, maintaining inventory and keeping air-tight books. This is why it’s important to raise funds for hiring consultants and specialists, but nothing beats learning how to do everything yourself.

Cons

  • People try to take advantage of you: The more your business grows, the more you’ll be on the radar of other businesses and individuals who will try to take advantage of you in one way or another—and there’s simply no escaping the fact that there are bad actors in the world. Beware, do your homework, and don’t go into business with anyone unless they’re squeaky clean. Make sure their proposition is legitimate in terms of how you’ll come out on the other end.
  • You can end up being out-of-touch, overconfident, or overly-stressed: Of course, this won’t necessarily happen, but single-mindedness can be the result of overzealous pursuit. Out of Forbes’ reasons why businesses fail, a big one is leadership failure. The other reasons, such as failure to properly communicate a value proposition, stem from the owner being disconnected from the people upon which the business depends.
  • It’s about nothing but money: In the beginning, making good money was going to be a byproduct, not the end-all-be-all, because you were passionate about people and ideas, not just money; don’t let dollar signs become your only reason for doing business. Those bad actors I talked about earlier? They’re motivated by moolah.
  • It becomes ho-hum: You’re not doing anything different, you’re set in your ways, and so are the people who keep you afloat; continue on this way, and you’ll soon find yourself gasping for air.

The great thing about starting a business is the cons depend on you. Decide to steer clear of the bad actors, not to be one yourself, and to stay attuned to the evolving business world. Evolve with it, even ahead of it, and you’ll see more pros than cons.

Small Businesses Can Benefit from Just-Enacted Aid Act

The Small Business Jobs Act could be a game-changer for struggling small firms, a lending executive said recently.

George Harrop is the managing director of small-business lending at CapitalSource, a retail bank and commercial lender. He suggests that the act – which was signed into law on Monday – can help provide financing to small businesses that were too big to qualify for Small Business Administration-backed loans.

“SBA 7(a) loans are permanently increased from $2 million to $5 million, and SBA 504 loans can now go up to a total loan amount of $12 million,” Harrop says.

Also significant for young entrepreneurs is that the bill sets up a $30 billion lending fund; the fund will provide federal money to community banks to stimulate small-business lending. An additional $1.5 billion will be provided to state small-business agencies in support of their loan programs.

And entrepreneurs can now deduct the cost of their health insurance from their self-employment tax – the 15.3 percent levy that the self-employed must pay for Medicare and Social Security.

In many ways, the jobs act will make life easier for those starting their own businesses.

Start-Ups Starting Smaller and Leaner, But More Aggressive

When people ponder founding a new company, many might think about years of developing and perfect their product followed by the long struggle to gain a toe-hold in the industry. But The New York Times reports that start-ups need not necessarily follow this pattern to prove successful. Instead, a growing number of companies are taking the so-called lean start-up model that has come out of Silicon Valley.

Areas like Silicon Valley and Boston are well known as focal points of innovation and venture funding, making them popular places to start. But Silicon Valley has increasingly approached venture spending in a dramatically different manner, encouraging companies to dive into the market almost immediately.

Rather than perfecting a product over years, these companies will put together a working model and continue to fix and tweak as they speak with prospective clients, often incorporating comments and specific requests. Many take the same approach to business models, going through a process of constant testing and exposure to real-world conditions.

The approach has quickly gained interest beyond Silicon Valley as well, with Harvard Business School requiring students to start their own businesses over the course of the school year and the National Science Foundation developing its N.S.F. Innovation Corps grants on the idea.

“It’s all about how to apply the scientific method to market-opportunity identification,” Errol Arkilic, a program manager at the foundation, told the Times. “And that is exactly why this method is the one the N.S.F. selected.”

StartUpSmart notes that the concept has been around for at least three years, but has gained increased visibility with the publishing of The Lean Startup, written by venture investor Eric Ries. The book outlines a few other key ideas behind lean start-ups, including openness to potential ventures in any field and, importantly, the understanding that many such businesses will fail despite their founders’ best efforts.

“Over 70 years, this Valley has developed a culture that does not personalize failure,” Randy Komisar, of venture firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, told the Times. “If you’re not corrupt, stupid or lazy, we see failure as learning — learn from it, and reapply it.”

While this seems like a positive approach to new businesses, the model still has its opponents. Xconomy‘s Jamie Goldstein notes that the companies that have grown fastest after the introduction of their product were those that tackled issues that they were unclear they could solve. The businesses focused on the product with the understanding that a big enough innovation would ultimately find clients.

Starting a company? Good luck – Venture funding drops in Q3

Startups have had a bit more to be hopeful about with the U.S. economy seeming to be on the upswing. But investors are not proving as cheerful through the first three quarters of 2012, as venture capital dropped once again in the third quarter, according to The Associated Press.

The latest numbers from MoneyTree, the quarterly study put out by consulting group PricewaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association, show that venture capital funding fell to only $6.49 billion in the third quarter.

That amounts to a nearly 12 percent drop from the second quarter, when funding reached $7.34 billion, and it came on a significantly smaller number of deals as well. Total deals dropped from 992 in the second quarter to only 890 in the past three months.

While the third quarter still ranks above the first quarter of the year, when venture funds distributed only $6.17 billion, the past nine months saw venture funding fall roughly 10 percent from the same period last year.

“The decline in funding for Seed/Early stage companies is firmly in place – we’ve seen a drop in dollars and deals both quarter-over-quarter and year-over-year,” said Tracy Lefteroff, global managing partner of the venture capital practice at PwC US.

The most successful industries for keeping investments going have been in IT and biotech, but even biotech has suddenly had difficulty drumming up interest in new businesses as opposed to older, existing investments.

“We’re seeing fewer new venture funds being raised which means less capital is available for new investments,” explained Lefteroff. “And, we’re seeing venture capitalists be very cautious with the capital that is available due to the lack of a significant number of liquidity events. Instead, venture capitalists are continuing to support the companies already in their portfolio.”

Forbes notes that there have even been some big deals in the past quarter, including $200 million for electronic payments company Square and $125 million for cloud services firm Box. But the investment market beyond electronic industries has looked fairly bleak.

One of the biggest losers was also one of the most prominent fields today – clean technology. Many investors have started to shy away from the area with growing uncertainty about these industries in advance of next month’s presidential election.

How To Write Checks

That way, when you bring it in to cash or deposit at your credit union, or when you’re depositing through mobile check deposit, you can be sure that it will be accepted. 

If the check is not written correctly, the credit union may not cash or deposit your check. In that case, you must go back to the check writer to have it replaced or corrected. Some common mistakes are

  • incorrect date
  • numerical and written amounts don’t match
  • check writer’s signature missing on the front
  • ripped or altered checks
  • and checks written in pencil.
